Tianhao Fu

I’m currently an undergraduate student in Engineering Science 2T9 at the University of Toronto. My major interest is in foundation models that encode modalities together with deep reasoning in language models (known as MLLMs) to solve real-world problems like cancer research. Efficiency work, including operator kernels and computer architectures, is also an important aspect of my research. I used to be a full-stack developer who mainly focused on Next.js, SpringBoot, and MySQL before starting my research career.

Starting in 2024, I have interned at the Bo Wang Lab, supervised by Dr. Bo Wang, at Vector Institute and the FLARE Lab, supervised by Dr. Jun Ma, at both University Health Network (Princess Margaret Cancer Center) and Vector Institute. During these internships, I have been focusing on traditional classification/segmentation/detection neural networks (specialists) as well as foundation models and MLLMs (generalists) applied on both 2D and 3D medical images, including CT, MRI, and ultrasound.

Outside of work, I led a team called Project Neura and conducted research projects like SegWithU and Varest with members from institutions including Vector Institute, Mila, University of Toronto, McGill University, University of Waterloo, and many others. In addition, we also had some fun engineering projects like LEADS, MIP Candy, and Erbium.

In my first semester at the University of Toronto, I joined UTMIST as an internal research team lead working on the AIP project and the SegWithU project. Later in July 2026, I was promoted to the Vice President of Research.

I was also previously a research assistant at Shanghai Jiao Tong University supervised by Dr. Bin Sheng during summer 2026.
